The University of Utah’s new artificial intelligence supercomputer, Redtail, has debuted among the fastest and most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world.
According to the TOP500 ranking, Redtail ranks No. 159 in performance and No. 76 in energy efficiency among the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world. The system is designed to serve as a foundation for Utah’s growing artificial intelligence ecosystem, providing researchers, students, businesses and public-sector organizations with access to advanced computing resources.
The approximately $50 million project was funded through a combination of philanthropic and public-sector support, including a $15 million one-time allocation from the Utah Legislature. Redtail incorporates HPE supercomputing infrastructure and NVIDIA technologies.
University officials say the system could help accelerate research in areas including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, mental health, genetics and environmental science. The university’s Center for High Performance Computing will operate Redtail and provide training, engineering support and other resources to help Utah researchers and organizations make use of the technology.
The university also launched an AI challenge program that will give selected researchers and educators access to Redtail and assistance from AI experts. Full user operations are expected to begin in late fall 2026.
